Which Performance Rights Organization Should I Choose?

This is where the articles become more practical. We’re going to help you decide on the right Performance Rights Organization for your situation as a music creator.
There are 4 main PROs in the United States – BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, and AMRA. If you are a singer / songwriter, in a band, or part of a band that writes original material, you’re most likely going to register with BMI or ASCAP Other organizations are for more established artists – either by invite only, or very selective.
The difference between ASCAP and BMI is the model on which they operate. Otherwise, they do pretty much the same thing – collect royalties on your behalf, and deliver those royalties to you.
ASCAP charges $50 per writer because it uses a member-funded model. It acts like a professional guild with benefits. On the other hand, BMI is free for songwriters to join, as it’s funded by licensing fees from radio stations, venues, streaming platforms, TV, film, etc.
BMI has a wider size and reach, and as a songwriter, this is the most logical option if you are just starting to release music.
Consider this a recommendation, but please do some more research on each organization. Below is a quick breakdown of BMI vs. ASCAP, with some information about SESAC and AMRA.
